a. Project purpose and justification

The work of research and development of the genealogy of the Pires Family began two years ago through the original idea conceived by the brothers Eliomar and Osmar Pires Martins Junior. The rescue of the memory of the Pires Family brought inspiration and added the collaboration of close and distant relatives, who approached to collaborate as much as possible for the construction of the family tree, that holds Manoel Pires de Moraes as the Pires Family`s genearch.

The patriarch Manoel Pires de Moraes had fifteen (15) children in two nuptials, eleven (11) of the marriage to Genoveva Martins de Souza, who was renamed Genoveva Martins Pires,  who died prematurely in 1925, and four (04) children of the marriage with Josefa Sardinha da Costa (maiden name) or Josefa Sardinha Pires (married name).

The genealogical tree of Manoel Pires de Moraes is richly diversified in fifteen trunks and their ramifications, which made eighty-one (81) grandchildren, more than two hundred and twenty-two (222) great-grandchildren, two hundred and fifty-four great-great-grandchildren (254) and eighty-three (83) great-great-great-grandchildren. Until the closing of the second edition of the Pires Family’s book, six hundred and forty (640) direct descendants were raised, with their spouses, forming a family tree consisting of more than a thousand (1000) family members who have already left or are among us.

They are people and characters of the most differentiated ages, professions, areas of activity in society and several domiciles, including immigrants from Brazil, who live in countries abroad, such as Argentina, United States of America, England, Ireland, Belgium, France and Luxembourg.

This project of website and social media tools is an important initiative that aims to expand and maintain the genealogy work of the Pires Family. With the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), a new phase of support for the research and development of the genealogy of the Pires Family will now be possible with this Project. From this horizon, the contents and their organization have the following objectives:

  • Show the Pires family tree (Peres surname, originally)
  • Expand the genealogical research of the Saucer and related relatives
  • Share stories about the Pires Family
  • Gather more and more Family members, news and useful information
  • Working with Family members to preserve and value history
  • Share genealogy research with others
  • Provide paths for development and knowledge
  • Helping and learning from other families about search techniques
  • Capturing resources for genealogical research and study

Based on previous proposals and initiatives, through a content management system (CMS), associated with other social media tools linked to it, this Project will share posts organized according to the following categories of information (content and news)

  • Surnames
  • Family News
  • Genealogy news
  • Genealogy techniques
  • Networking
  • Do you know who is?
  • Open educational resources
  • Content marketing
  • Fundraising (Philanthropy)

This work also depends on the collaboration of several actors and stakeholders, who can and should act to consolidate many challenges. Perhaps the participation of the Family is the main challenge to awaken the passion and recognition of the values of their ancestors and contemporaries. The good news is that this is already happening and could be noticed in the great meetings of the Pires Family, promoted in 2015 and 2016.

b. Measurable project objectives and related success criteria

About two year ago, in 2015, it was released the first edition of the book “Pires Family: History of the Genealogical Tree of Manoel Pires de Moraes”. The event took place during the 1st Meeting of the Pires Family, held on 05/12/2015, in Goiânia, Brazil, in the beautiful Vivence Suítes hotel (who belongs to Vanessa and Jordana Pires Morales – daughters of Sebastião Pires Campos, net of Hygino Pires Martins and great-granddaughters of the genearch Manoel Pires de Moraes).

The pre-releasing of the second edition of the book took place at the II Meeting of the Pires Family, on 12/3/2016, at Fazenda Brejo do Sucuri, in the municipality of Acreúna – GO. It is a more advanced edition, which advances in the elaboration of the genealogy of Manol Pires de Moraes, in addition to a highlight: the biography and family history of each of the fifteen children, sixteen grandchildren and a great-grandson of the Pires genearch in Goiás.

In addition, this new edition will be accompanied by the creation and operation of this Pires Family website, which will be an online knowledge management system, for sharing information on social networks and also a powerful genealogy tool for the family and all its ramifications. It is worth remembering that the published content of this multimedia project will have versions in English and Spanish, in order to expand the network of collaborators.

d. Assumptions and constraints

Project assumptions can be translated as factors that would affect this Project. It is important to highlight some assumptions because there is a level of uncertainty associated with them which introduces risk to a project. So, the stakeholders must be mindful of these assumptions in order to identify and mitigate any risk associated with them:

  • The products that will originate within the scope of this Project for the professional activities and services provided have quality and value for the members of the Family
  • The use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is a powerful tool for networking and building the Family tree
  • This project does not belong only to its idealizers / stakeholders, but to all of the Family and any others that are willing to collaborate

On the other hand, project constraints are limitations that this Project would face due to funding, scheduling/time, technology, or resources. It is also important that all stakeholders must remain mindful of the following constraints:

  • Family engagement needs to be awakened through relationship marketing
  • The project requires the contracting of a marketing professional with skills in providing integrated communication services
  • The planning and organization of genealogical research work demands investments in equipment and operational infrastructure

e. High-level risks

Based on the assumptions and constraints, we can state the high-level risks in the project. To determine and employ the necessary risk mitigation/avoidance strategy  as appropriate, the following risks for this Project have been identified:

  • Most of the materials and professional services provided under the Project scope depend on investments linked to the fundraising strategy
  • As the Project expands its reach from national to international, more supporters will emerge and accountability mechanisms must contain the necessary transparency.
  • The existence of famous or recognized relatives as scientific, political or intellectual authorities can generate a feeling that the Project is directed towards the promotion of few relatives to the detriment of the interests of many.
